Tekko needs artwork!                    ...again...

Technically a want-ad I'd say...but I figured it'd reach more artist eyes here...

I really apologize, this should have been out sooner >.>  Sorry about the quickly approaching due-date!!

We are once again taking submissions of artwork to don the various badges and publications for Tekkoshocon. All art donated to Tekko will be credited in the program booklet with a link to the artists' websites and if they can be found in the Artists' Alley and/or Art Show & Auction!  So if attendees like your stuff, they'll come and find you!  Great way to get business.

You can submit as much as you want and we will try and use it all somewhere!  Submissions can be in any medium.  This year's theme is tokusatsu!  Badge art must be in this theme!  We prefer this theme for b/w program booklet artwork but will take general, not-themed art as well.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS MARCH 20th 2010
The winners will be announced via e-mail within a few days of the deadline.

Please submit the following, with your entry as an attachment to thepatches@gmail.com

Your Name
If you have a nickname you would like to be credited as
A website URL to link to if applicable

Here's what we're looking for!

Weekend badge art by Ayshea Brown.

Badge Artwork

Badge art will be...well...used on BADGES!   Everyone will be wearing someone's art!  We need separate art for Staff, Dealers, Weekend, Premium, Saturday, Vendors and Artists.  That's a lot of artwork!! The creator of the artwork that is chosen for the Premium Weekend Badge will win a free general weekend membership to Tekkoshocon 2010!  If you have already pre-registered and win, you have the option of transferring your prize to another person of your choosing or rolling it over and using it for yourself in 2011 instead!

- Full-color artwork.
- 4x3" horizontal, and at least 300DPI/PPI
- TIFF or JPEG format please
- No border or writing/typography
- Art must fit the theme of the convention which is "tokusatsu".  For a definition of toku, check out its Wikipedia entry
- It must feature at least one of our mascots, who are described below.
- Fanart is not permitted.  You may only draw our characters in generic or parody themes.  For example, you can draw Miyako as a generic sentai character but you cannot draw her as the Pink Ranger.  You can make up your own giant monster ravaging Pittsburgh, but it can't be Godzilla or Gamera.  TL;DR:Don't put copyright or trademark stuff in your artwork.
- All artwork must be your original work

Interior artwork by Ghostfire and Mandypandaa.

Program Book Interior Artwork

This artwork will appear inside the program book.  It's used to decorate the pages and make them more interesting and nice to look at.  Some of this artwork may be used in other places besides the program book where black and white art is useful.  One randomly chosen artist who submits art for for the interior of the program booklet will receive a free Tekkoshocon 2010 T-shirt!

-Black and white, gray-scale, color or screen-toned art.  Character art without a background tends to look the nicest.  If you provide us with color artwork, if you can also provide us with the lineart/black and while version of that art as well, that would be awesome!!!
- No larger (it can be smaller than) than 5.5x8.5 or 4.25x11" and at least 300DPI/PPI
- TIFF or JPEG format please
- No border or writing/typography
- It must feature at least one of our mascots, who are described below.  It does not have to be in the Toku theme and it could just be our characters in their regular outfits being themselves), however if we get an abundance of art, toku art will take preference.

Meet the Mascots!

Here's a rundown of our mascots.  What they look like, what they're into and all that jazz.  We're going to leave it up to you to artistically interpret their descriptions because that's more fun right?!

The Main Mascots

Miyako Tekko- This hyperactive, cheerful blonde wants to be at the center of everything.  Whether she's rocking out at the center of a dance circle, showing off her new cosplay at the masquerade, or arguing the merits of her favorite dub in line for autographs, you know she's giving 110 percent!  Miyako is just as enthusiastic when she's not good at something, which often leads to disaster.  She wants to be a voice actress.
Features: around 17-18 years old, long blonde hair with bangs, tall with blue eyes.  Her accessory is a hammer.

Hagane Tekko - 15 years old.  While Hagane's sister is outgoing and friendly, he tends to be a bit standoffish at first.  However, the Tekko family hyper-enthusiasm shows up whenever he's around technology.  A video game prodigy, he dabbles in programming in his spare time.  He and Miyako overdo their fights just like they overdo everything else.. Features: Short black curly/messy hair, glasses, loves loud shirts, green eyes.  His accessory of choice is an umbrella.

The Cousins! - The cousins were brought onto the scene for Tekko 6 to complete the "Super Sentai" theme. We consider them minor mascots, but they're awesome nonetheless and there's some artists that love to draw them!

Al Migawa - 23 years old, the oldest of the group spends a lot of time quietly making or fixing things.  You wouldn't think it to look at him - his body seems just a bit too big for the intricate work that he performs with a brush or a pen.  At any rate, you'll usually find Al selling his wares at a friend's table in the Artists' Alley, entering a piece in the model competition, or taking in a leisurely panel.  Features: Strongly built, tall, light brown hair, brown eyes.

Oh Migawa - 15 years old, Oh was born within days of Hagane, and as a result the two are obnoxiously competitive with each other.  While Hagane usually wins when they face off in video games, Oh counters this by editing together AMVs and viral videos that become Internet legends.  Oh himself is a bit of a legend in the Online Tekko Island MMORPG, though he prefers to game in person.  At least once during every Tekkoshocon he and Hagane get into melodramatic, ridiculously verbose shouting matches during a CCG tournament. Features - Short black hair, blue eyes, reletively short.

Mona Migawa - 13 years old and the baby of the group, Mona doesn't have a lot of chances to speak her mind.  Hagane and Oh pick on her constantly, and it's hard to get a word in edgewise when Miyako is around.  As a result, Mona is both painfully shy and desperate to be noticed.  She savors the few seconds of face time she gets with the guests during autographs and practices hard to be able to thank the Japanese guests in their own language.  She's developing a sense of style with an eye for J-fashion that Miyako can't begin to duplicate.  More than anything, she loves going to concerts and practices hard in the hopes that she'll be the one on stage some day.  Features - Mid-length black hair, loves Japanese street fashion, glasses, green eyes.

Here's a full shot of the TEKKO RIDER STEEL costume.

And here's a small selection of artwork from previous years to inspire you!  Oh the nostalgia...

Yup, I guess I should have stated it more clearly closer to the top of the post.  ::goes to fix that::

This year's theme is Tokusatsu.

Tokusatsu is actually a main theme? (Shows how little I expect and how long it takes me to figure these things out. XD )

I barely draw to advance in Pictionary, but I already bet that the artwork for this year will be amazing!
Can't wait to see the winning art!

Small correction for the program book art

We are actually planning on doing a full color book this year, so color images will be accepted and likely preferred. Screen toned Black and white images will also work still too.

Also, please CC your emails of artwork to me at "Jenn dot Blankenship at Tekkoshocon dot com" in addition to Patches' email. Publications@tekkoshocon.com may not be forwarding to my email anymore, so I would prefer the direct emails instead. Thanks. Can't wait to see what comes in!

I'm glad this was finaly posted. I was so mad at myself for not finishing up the drawings and short comic I did last year for lucky 7 and thought since I didn't see any fanart listing that it wasn't going on this year. well this is a relief.

But I do have to say it seems tekko has its favs to the sci-fi feel with having two giant robot themes and the sentai theme but I'm cool with that.

Though that makes me wonder how do you guys decided on the theme?

The con chair picks it generally^^  We have had a lot of sci-fi themes though.  Sentai, Giant Robots, Cyber-Punk and now Tokusatsu (although, toku doesn't have to be sci-fi).

Can't wait to see what everyone sends in this year!  I'm worried to death we won't get enough >.>

Hello ---

So, if we make more than one entry, just attach it all in one email? I'm considering just sending different versions of the same piece of artwork i'm doing for the badges, just incase one would be more suitable than the other.

Is this alright?

So who is Tekko Rider Steel?  Is he one of the established mascots?  Is he Hagane?  Or is he just the mysterious Toku hero who wandered into town for Tekko 8?

So you've got a potential team-of-five plus Tekko Rider, right?

We keep imagining Hagane inside the suit and that's how I've been drawing it.  But really, we're going to leave things up for interpretation by the artists ^^  Do whatever you want with it! Or don't use Steel at all XD

Yes! pass it around. We know there are not many cons out there that cater to Toku fans.
